Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann in Galway was formed in the mid-fifties by schools inspector Pádraic Ó h-Eidhin and by Dr Galligan. Groups of musicians began to meet in St Patrick’s School, the Industrial School, and Mattie Forde’s Eagle Bar on the corner of Henry Street and William Street West. This represented the first stirrings of general interest in Irish traditional music in the city.

Set dancing all day and into the night in Milltown

Milltown Community Centre will come alive with the sound of set-dancing on Saturday April 17 for a day of workshops and a ceili that night. The workshops are being promoted by Westmeath Rural Arts and will take place from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm.

They have performed with Sharon Shannon, De Dannan, and Altan and now the hugely popular and talented Cunningham family from Connemara are set to take centre stage themselves at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on March 7, with a spectacular new music and dance show called Fuaim Chonamara (The Sound of Connemara). Fuaim Chonamara boasts a wealth of talented musicians and dancers from all over the west of Ireland. Brian Ó Cuinneagáin headlines the show direct from his US tour with Teada and Seamus Begley. He will be joined on stage by his sisters Irene, Ashling, and Lorraine, while his younger brother Michael also features as a dancer and musician.

As part of Roscommon Arts Centre’s Reel Thing programme of traditional Irish music and entertainment, the centre is offering a new opportunity for children and young people to learn to play the tin whistle or fiddle, under the guidance of well-known traditional musicians and teachers Fiona Doherty and John Wynne.
